Rolling the Dice on Fellowship: Board Games and Faith

When I think about some of my most meaningful experiences in ministry, many of them happened not in formal worship settings, but around tables—sharing meals, conversations, and yes, even board games. There’s something profoundly sacred about gathering around a table with others, and I believe our faith calls us to take this kind of fellowship seriously, even when it looks like play.

Our tradition has always understood the significance of table fellowship. When Jesus shared meals with his disciples and with outcasts, when he broke bread at the Last Supper, he was doing more than simply eating. He was creating community, building relationships, and making space for God’s presence to dwell among people. Every time we gather for Holy Communion, we remember that sacred act of coming together around a table.
Board games offer us a unique opportunity to experience this same kind of meaningful connection. When we sit down together for a game night, we’re not just passing time—we’re creating space for laughter, friendly competition, storytelling, and genuine human interaction in a world that often feels increasingly disconnected. We’re practicing the art of being fully present with one another, which is itself a spiritual discipline.

I’ll confess: I love board games. The biggest collection I own is likely my board game collection. (pictured) Whether it’s the strategic depth of a complex game or the simple joy of a quick card game, I find something deeply satisfying about these shared experiences. But beyond my personal enjoyment, I’ve discovered that board games can actually teach us important lessons about ourselves and the world around us. They help us practice patience, learn to handle both victory and defeat with grace, work together toward common goals, and navigate the delicate balance between competition and community.

The beauty of board games today is their incredible diversity. There are games about building civilizations, solving mysteries, telling stories, cooperating to overcome challenges, or simply making each other laugh. There are games for every personality, every interest, and every skill level. This endless variety mirrors the beautiful diversity of our congregation and God’s creation itself.

Most importantly, board games give us permission to have fun together. Our faith is not meant to be somber and serious all the time. Joy, laughter, and play are gifts from God, and when we engage in them together, we strengthen the bonds that make us more than just individuals who happen to worship in the same building—we become the beloved community God calls us to be.

So I invite you: join us for Board Game Night on Saturday, January 24th at 5:00 pm. Come ready to learn something new, to laugh, to connect with fellow members of our congregation, and to experience the sacred gift of simply being together. No experience necessary—just bring yourself and an open heart. I can’t wait to see you there.
